Referring to the quota referendum, on Tuesday Minister of State for Government Communication Bence Tuzson told Hungarian television channel M1 that Brussels must respect people’s wishes.
Mr. Tuzson said that recent experience shows that a successful referendum on an issue of great importance is able to put the brakes on the European Union’s decision-making system. The European Commission has already launched the process of introducing a quota system with no upper limit on numbers, so now the question is “whether we are able to stop it somewhere at a national level”.
The Minister of State said that nobody should overturn a system in which “the European Union’s decisions are made on the basis of the decisions of nations”, and it will be the Hungarian people who decide Hungary’s stance on migration.
Mr. Tuzson pointed out that “nations must take a position on migration, illegal immigration and mandatory relocation”, since there are very few such national issues which stand above party politics, and which could irreversibly determine our fate for fifty to one hundred years.
