There is a connection between the coronavirus and illegal migration, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister György Bakondi stated at a press conference held on Sunday in Budapest. He also said Hungary will suspend the admission of illegal migrants to the transit zone for an indefinite period.

Mr Bakondi said the majority of illegal migrants are coming from or through Iran. He highlighted that Iran is one of the epicentres of the coronavirus where there have been a high number of infections and also fatalities. Hungary has therefore decided to suspend the admission of new people to the transit zone for an indefinite period in the interest of protecting those who are in the transit zone and the country in general.

Tibor Lakatos, head of the duty centre of the Operational Corps said there are still no confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in Hungary. Worldwide there are almost 87,000 patients; however, the number of those who have recovered is increasing, he stressed.
