The government must build its policy upon the people’s opinion in order to take action successfully, the Minister of State for Governmental Affairs at the Cabinet Office of the Prime Minister said on the public service television news channel M1 on Tuesday.

Bence Tuzson said according to the Hungarian people’s opinion, the country’s borders must be protected, and therefore the government has an obligation to do just that, having faith “in the collective wisdom of the people”.

Hungary has achieved major results in this field, he highlighted.

The Minister of State said we need regulations which put an end to the ‘prison business’, restore values and channel any damages that may be awarded to victims of crimes.

Those who see no moral problem in this issue are wrong or intentionally ignore the fact that this is a fundamental social issue, Mr Tuzson said.

He highlighted that the purpose of penal policy is to deter people from the commission of crimes.

If there were homely conditions in prisons, that would compromise this deterrent effect, the Minister of State added.

On Kossuth Radio’s programme ‘Good morning, Hungary’, Mr Tuzson said not since 2015 has the migration situation been as serious as it is today.

However, thanks to the national consultation, Hungary is fully prepared for the protection of its borders, he stressed.

The Minister of State said as long as a civic government is in power, not a single illegal immigrant will set foot in Hungary.

According to Mr Tuzson, we need common European action, and the countries which protect their borders must be recognised.

Hungary is closely cooperating with neighbouring countries in border protection, and is also providing assistance for its Southern neighbours as well as for North Macedonia, the Minister of State said.
