Minister of State for Government Communication Bence Tuzson told Hungarian television channel M1 that if Hungary takes the stance that migrants cannot be returned to the country, it will also be able to prevent it happening.
He said that the EU can launch infringement procedures, but Hungary is acting lawfully, and European law cannot be overwritten by one-off decisions.
“We must act respectfully but decisively in the protection of Hungarian values, and even if it looks like a hard battle, in this area we must put up a fight”, he pointed out. He added that the country must be willing to reach an agreement, but fundamental values must not be abandoned.
