Parliamentary Minister of State Csaba Dömötör called the referendum on migrant quotas being held on 2 October a national issue which stands above party politics. Mr Dömötör said that he expects the Democratic Coalition (DK) party – which is urging people not to vote – to clearly state whether it supports or rejects Brussels’ plans on migration policy.
On Monday DK Deputy Chairman Csaba Molnár announced that his party is preparing its own one-month referendum campaign, independent from the other opposition parties. During the course of this his party will be urging voters not to participate in the referendum on 2 October.
In this regard Mr. Dömötör told journalists that although DK has joined the group of those who are trying to undermine the referendum, this is a crucial issue, since Brussels wants to resettle thousands of migrants in Hungary. According to the Minister of State, the referendum is the best method of saying “no” to this.
He said that the referendum is a national issue which stands above party politics and “it is not about internal political battles, but whether we are able to protect our communities and cultures”.
In addition, Mr. Dömötör added, mandatory relocation carries serious security risks, which cannot and should not be taken.
He said that he expects DK to give an honest answer to a simple question: “Do they support Brussels’ plans: yes or no?”
