On Wednesday Csaba Dömötör, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Cabinet Office of the Prime Minister, told Hungarian News Agency MTI that the October referendum on the mandatory relocation quotas has never been as timely as it is now.

He pointed out that a speech by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday shows that Brussels has not given up on its plans to establish a mechanism to distribute migrants among Member States. This means that the Hungarian referendum has never been as timely as it is now, he said.

According to Mr. Dömötör, we must say “no” to Brussels’ quota package, because it includes three particularly dangerous elements.

Firstly, Brussels wants to establish a permanent mechanism for distributing migrants. In light of the increasing migration pressure, this would entail the relocation of thousands of migrants to Hungary.

Secondly, this is compounded by a previous decision by Brussels, which would impose fines on those countries which do not support relocation. This can be regarded as open exertion of pressure, which must be rejected.

Finally, he added, Brussels would even facilitate family unification, as a result of which the number of relocated migrants would further multiply.

It is clear that the quota package comes with risks that must not be accepted, Mr. Dömötör pointed out.

The Government of Hungary continues to insist on its standpoint, according to which it is only the Hungarian people who can decide on who they want to live with. Thus, regardless of party political preferences, everyone is asked to vote in the referendum on 2 October, and say “no” to “the dangerous proposals of Brussels”, Mr. Dömötör underlined.
