Also with the reinstatement of mandatory immigration detention, the Government’s objective is to reinforce the security of the Hungarian people to the fullest possible extent, State Secretary for Government Communication Bence Tuzson told journalists on Friday in Budapest.

After having reviewed the situation related to immigration and terrorism in Europe, the Government decided: those who submit their asylum applications upon entering the transit zone as well as those who submit an appeal to the courts against the refusal of their applications "cannot freely move around in the territory of Hungary and the European Union, but remain in mandatory immigration  detention” until the final and absolute assessment of their applications, the State Secretary said upon informing the press about the Cabinet’s decision.

According to his reasoning, this was necessary because there are some involved in the European terrorist situation, such as the perpetrator of the Berlin incident, who are staying in the territory of the EU without legal grounds.

The Government asked Interior Minister Sándor Pintér to draft the bill related to detention within the shortest possible time, and to ensure that it should enter into force at the earliest possible time, Mr Tuzson said.
