This year more than 6,300 migrants have been apprehended at the Hungarian border, the Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister stated on the public service television news channel M1 on Wednesday morning.

György Bakondi said in the past few weeks the number of those attempting to cross the border has increased; this is equally true of the Romanian, Croatian and Serbian border sections.

He added that while last year 490 illegal border-crossers were apprehended at the Romanian border, up to the end of February this year, this number had already reached 470. The number of those attempting to enter the country from Serbia has increased which indicates that people smugglers have intensified their activities among the large number of migrants who are currently in the vicinity of the border, he pointed out.

He also highlighted that ever more migrants are arriving in Turkey, and the number of those heading for the Greek islands has increased as well. The renewed fighting in Syria could be the cause of this, combined with the fact that Turkey has begun the relocation of illegal immigrants staying within its borders to security zones.

Mr Bakondi said at present the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is very difficult; migrants are arriving in their territory in very large numbers, and at the same time, the Bosnian government’s possibilities in stopping everyone at the border are extremely limited.
