There is a sharp dividing line regarding how people perceive climate protection. There are some who talk about it such as those in Brussels, and there are others who, similar to Hungary, also take action, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Cabinet Office of the Prime Minister said on Monday on the public service television news channel M1 in connection with the Prime Minister’s state-of-the-nation address which also covered climate protection measures.

Hungary has succeeded in increasing its economy whilst reducing its carbon dioxide emissions compared with 1990, Csaba Dömötör stressed, observing that this does not in the least mean that in the future we would not have much to do in the area of climate protection.

The State Secretary described the elimination of illegal waste disposal sites, which was also mentioned in the state-of-the-nation address, as a long overdue debt, and said to this end the powers of the competent authorities will have to be reinforced.

The government decisions on fundamental climate protection targets have already been adopted. At present, they are developing specific legal actions, he added.

The goal is for these measures to take effect within the shortest possible time, and to yield tangible results as it is not irrelevant for Hungary how it manages to carbon-neutralise economic production and transport, Mr Dömötör said.
