On Tuesday Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács told Hungarian television channel M1 in its evening programme that Brussels must be prevented from applying the mandatory relocation quotas, and it must be sent a clear message – the most effective form of which is a referendum.

According to Mr. Kovács, without such a clear message Brussels and the European Left will make every effort to implement their pro-immigration policy.

Speaking about the referendum set for the beginning of October, he pointed out that – following a registration procedure – people with dual citizenship and Hungarians living abroad will also have the opportunity to vote. As part of the campaign to be launched in mid-August, they will also be informed exactly how they will be able to cast their vote.

On Tuesday President of the Republic János Áder set 2 October 2016 as the date for the national referendum on the EU’s mandatory relocation of non-Hungarian citizens to Hungary. On 24 February Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that the Government would initiate a national referendum on the mandatory relocation quotas. The question to be put to the public in the referendum is as follows: “Do you agree that the European Union should have the power to impose the compulsory relocation of non-Hungarian citizens to Hungary without the consent of the National Assembly of Hungary?”
