According to Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács, by electing Manfred Weber, the EPP has closed ranks and has adopted a position that lies closer to the legacy of the founding fathers, including former German Chancellor, the late Helmut Kohl, and which accordingly also represents the position of the Hungarian Government.

Speaking on Hungarian M1 television’s Thursday evening current affairs program, Mr. Kovács was asked with relation to the fact that, during the course of the day at the party family’s congress in Helsinki, Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) politician Manfred Weber was elected as the lead candidate of the European People’s Party (EPP) for the post of President of the European Commission.

The “soul” and most important essence of Europe and the European Union is that it is made up of nations, Mr. Kovács said. “These nations think differently, but have established a cooperation that is good for everyone”, he continued, adding: “It can be in nobody’s interests for an opposite process to occur”.

According to the Government Spokesperson, what is called liberalism by many is attempting to place nations under its control, break the consensus according to which Europe has functioned so far, and eliminate the diversity that was the secret of success in the Europe of nations.

There is reason for self-criticism within the People’s Party; we cannot forget in how fewer countries a member of the party family is providing the leading force in coalitions compared to previously, and also cannot disregard the fact that the British have decided to leave the European Union, nor the “quality of leadership” that the EU had under Jean-Claude Juncker, he also indicated.
