“As it has done so far, in future Hungary will continue to do everything possible to close all loopholes before illegal immigration and the groups and organisations that are organising it”, Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács declared on Monday in Brussels.
At his press conference, the Government Spokesperson told the press: In Hungary’s experience, many groups that claim to be performing charity or human rights activities are in fact acting according to a very different intent and political will, namely they are providing assistance towards the plans that have “been put onto the table” by George Soros, and more recently by the UN’s migration package.
In view of the fact that Hungary still believes that both it and the European Union are capable of protecting its borders, it is taking all possible action in the interests of this goal. If needed it will construct a fence, increase the number of police and military personnel on duty along the border, and adapt its legal environment to these goals, the Government Spokesperson underlined.
As he explained, the National Consultation is clear proof that the people of Hungary have a determined opinion and are giving the Government a mandate for the introduction of the Stop Soros legislative package, and to adapt all of the required legal conditions to both Hungarian and international law.
With relation to the UN’s migration treaty, the draft of which is currently under development, Mr. Kovács declared: The Hungarian Government must represent Hungarian interests. The most important thing is for the new document to conform to Hungarian interests, and if this is not the case then Hungary will take the necessary action, which could include exiting the negotiation process, he stressed.
The reason for this is that in contrast to other opinions Hungary believes that illegal migration, which bears with it various dangers, can be stopped. In Hungary’s view, the erection of the border security fence is an effective instrument towards this end, since the number of successful attempts to illegally cross the border has fallen to practically zero since the fence has been in existence. And finally, a stricter legal framework is required to provide a successful solution to the global migration crisis, Mr. Kovács added.
With relation to the expansion of the Europe Union, and particularly the EU accession of the Western Balkan countries, he declared that the process of EU integration is incomplete. While many countries have a Balkan strategy, the EU does not, despite the fact that the stability of the Balkans should be one of the European Union’s top priorities. In Hungary’s opinion, Montenegro is ready to join the European Union, and progress is also required in the case of Serbia.
In reply to a question on next year’s European Union elections, the Government Spokesperson said that many are attempting to portray the efforts of the Visegrád Group (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, the V4) as going against EU goals.
The standpoint of the V4 is strictly based on the EU treaties and the related regulations with relation to the so-called pan-European constituencies, he underlined. Since the European documents do not include the fact that MEPs should be elected according to pan-European lists through the establishment of pan-European constituencies, the countries affected are viewing the initiative with suspicion. The viability and need for such constituencies can be fundamentally called into question, he emphasised.
He declared that it previously transpired with regard to several similar proposals that they in fact served the interests of larger or better positioned EU member states. Any and all innovations can exclusively be accepted while taking into account the will and intent of every member state, Mr. Kovács added.
