“It is the duty of the Government and Parliament to react to the result of Sunday’s quota referendum”, Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács told Hungarian news agency MTI at the governing parties’ referendum results watch in Budapest.

Citing the results already announce, Mr. Kovács said the message sent by the electorate is absolutely clear, because the No votes are in an overwhelming majority and “the level of rejection of the Brussels policy is outstanding”.

“In view of the fact that this referendum was initiated by the Government, it cannot act otherwise than to regard this decision as an obligatory duty”, the Spokesperson said.
However, the Hungarian quota referendum also places an obligation on Brussels, because a plebiscite cannot be ignored, he stressed.
