On Thursday, Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács told public television channel M1 that it is wrong to urge citizens not to vote or to invalidate their ballot papers in the referendum on compulsory migrant relocation in October.

Mr. Kovács said that this attitude is unworthy of the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (TASZ), an organisation established to defend rights.

In one of its statements, TASZ has stated that the referendum is “inhuman and misleading”, and that the campaign “is inciting hatred and is bogus, as this unlawful referendum is unsuited to asserting the will of the nation”.

The Government Spokesperson pointed out that the referendum is a national issue of historic significance; therefore people should vote. He added that the campaigns should urge people to vote one way or the other.

He stressed that the Government urges citizens to say “no” to Brussels’ failed policy.

Speaking about the beginning of the school year, Mr. Kovács said that preparations are proceeding in an orderly manner. If there were problems, those who usually call attention to them would surely be “bellowing them out”, he added.
