In the questionnaire of the national consultation, the government will also ask citizens about the damages awarded to illegal migrants, the Minister of State for International Communication and Relations stated on Thursday.

Zoltán Kovács said “the damages business is not confined to prisons alone”.

The Minister of State mentioned the case of the two Bangladeshi immigrants arriving in Hungary illegally who – with reference to the violation of their rights – sued the Hungarian State. He added that they were represented in the lawsuit “by organisations funded from abroad” and were eventually awarded ten million forints in damages. “This shows that it’s not enough that these organisations encourage and support immigration; they even make money out of it,” he added.

The politician said in light of the fact that there are more than a hundred thousand people on the Balkans route and illegal migration is ongoing, “the amount of damages that could be awarded to illegal migrants could be limitless”.

He highlighted that they ask everyone to state their opinions in the national consultation.

“There are some who believe that this is how it should be, that illegal migrants, too, are entitled to compensation. The government has its opinion on this matter, so we ask you to state your opinion about this issue in the questionnaire sincerely,” Mr Kovács said.
