On Thursday, Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács told Hungarian public television channel M1 that over the summer, prior to the referendum campaign, the Socialists used to state that they would be stepping up against the mandatory relocation quotas.

Mr. Kovács said this in reaction to the statement of Gyula Molnár leader of the socialist party (MSZP), according to which the party refuses to hold talks with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on the constitutional amendment.

Mr. Kovács reiterated that the Socialists used to take the position that they would support regulations or even the amendment of the constitution with a view to preventing mandatory relocation quotas from introducing in Hungary.

It would be time for the MSZP to decide whether it is able to stand up for national interests, Mr. Kovács added.
