According to the Government Spokesperson, Tuesday’s European Parliament (EP) debate on the Sargentini Report and the vote on Wednesday is a mockery of the rule of law in the name of the rule of law. Speaking on Hungarian M1 television’s Tuesday evening current affairs program, Zoltán Kovács spoke about the fact that the Report includes factual errors and applies a double standard.

The Government Spokesperson was asked with relation to the fact that the debate on the so-called Sargentini Report on the state of the rule of law in Hungary was held during Tuesday’s plenary session of the European Parliament. Mr. Kovács said: “Through using a continuously changing set of rules they are attempting to create the conditions in which the Report will eventually be adopted”. In his opinion the majority of decisions have already been made, the political opponents who have constructed “this deceitful defamation campaign, this witch hunt”, know what decision they want to make.

He also spoke about the fact that it will soon transpire how European People’s Party (EPP) MEPs will be voting, and whether they will “become soft” and follow the socialists and liberals, or return to the party’s original approach. “The battles must be fought internally, and we must try to convince the EPP of our own approach; if we are unsuccessful then it will become clear that it is not we who have changed, but the organisation”, he said.

The fault line is between those who are assuming a pro-migration position and those who want to preserve the continent “as the Europe we have come to know”, the Government Spokesperson stated.

According to Mr. Kovács, the Sargentini Report includes irregularities and factual errors, it applies a double standard, and the fact that such a thing can be done is a criticism of the EP. Even more worrying is the fact that the Parliament is vindicating rights for itself that are not included in the legal documents that provide the foundations of European cooperation, he underlined.
