Government Spokesperson Zoltán Kovács has told Kossuth Rádió’s “180 Minutes” that Hungary continues to reject every proposal for mandatory relocation, adding that the Government also considers the idea of the voluntary quota to be a bad idea, because it could further encourage migrants to set off for Europe.

Mr. Kovács pointed out that the Government is against relaxation of the rules.

Mr. Kovács stressed that the need is not for the introduction of new terms or a new unit of solidarity, but for compliance with existing rules. It is in the fundamental interest of Europe for order to be restored in the Mediterranean region, on the Mediterranean Sea and in the Balkans.

In order for Europe to be able recover from the migration crisis, existing rules but be complied with: Europe’s external borders must be protected. Any other action related to border protection – for example the protection of internal borders – is merely a form of displacement activity, he added.

The summit of EU heads of state and government will take place in Brussels on Thursday. Migration is the first item on the agenda at the working lunch, when participants are expected to review the implementation of the EU-Turkey deal made in March, and to evaluate results from agreements made with certain African countries. They will also determine the direction of further work and discuss reform of the common asylum system and means for applying the principle of responsibility and solidarity in the future.
