Although the positions of the anti-immigration Hungarian Government and pro-immigration German Government collide, according to the Government Spokesperson we must concentrate on issues with relation to which the foundations for cooperation are present.
Speaking on Kossuth Radio’s “Sunday Papers” show, Zoltán Kovács replied to question on Thursday’s meeting in Berlin between Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
He highlighted the fact that by protecting the Hungarian people with the security fence along its southern border, Hungary is also protecting Europe and creating the necessary conditions for the enforcement of European law and border security regulations.
“This can only be realised if we also have the support of the countries affected”, the Government Spokesperson stressed.
With relation to the fact that a new Central European NATO Division Command could be established with the support of Germany, he emphasised that effective formations based on cooperation are required to increase Europe’s defence capabilities.
Such a Division Command would involve units from Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia and Slovenia, he stated, adding that linking it to the German Command “seems rational within this framework”.
On the subject of cooperation relating to innovation and technological development, Mr. Kovács said it not only involves the automotive industry, but also other sectors of industry, pointing out that there are currently some six thousand German enterprises operating in Hungary, a significant proportion of which belong to high added value sectors.
“It is in Hungary’s interests for Hungarian small and medium-sized enterprises to connect to these partners that operate partly here and partly in Germany in such a way that they are able to exploit innovative and technological knowledge and capacities”, he said.
“Cooperation of this nature also represents one of the most important topics within the functioning of the European Union: increasing competitiveness is primarily related to these fields”, the Government Spokesperson said.
