Protecting the environment and the fight against climate change is important to Hungary in view of the fact that we would all like clean water, purer air and a more tolerable climate. Climate change can only be countered through action, and Hungary is acting accordingly: in recent years we have introduced measures that are exemplary even by European Union standards, and are moving towards the targets we have set successfully and consistently.

Hungary has determined climate protection goals, a climate protection action plan and climate protection measures. Hungary agrees with the targets that the European Union has undertaken to fulfil by 2030, because the EU action plan required for this is in place, and the necessary resources are available.

Hungary has in fact undertaken to do more than the EU’s 2030 targets. We have undertaken to ensure that 90% of Hungary’s electricity production will be emission-free by 2030. The Hungarian government regards everybody’s opinion as important and is also paying attention to everyone with relation to the issue of climate change, but it is also clear that the anti-government political statements of the opposition parties, which are hidden behind the topic of climate change, are in reality not part of the fight against climate change but are part of a political battle.

Hungary has determined climate protection goals, a climate protection action plan and climate protection measures, and has the necessary resources earmarked for them. Thanks to the measures introduced to date, we have achieved outstanding results with relation to decreasing emissions. Hungary’s emissions of greenhouse gases have fallen by a third since 1990, which corresponds to the reduction in emissions achieved by Denmark, placing us in ninth place in a tie with Denmark in European Union comparison.

Today, Hungary is performing better than most countries of the European Union with regard to climate-neutral electricity production. Amongst others, far from reducing them, Austria, Cyprus, Ireland, Malta, Portugal and Spain have in fact increased their greenhouse gas emissions in recent years. We will succeed in pushing through the fact that 90% of Hungary’s electricity production will by carbon dioxide and carbon neutral by 2030.
