Partnership between Hungary and Vietnam has been getting more and more important in the past years. This trend is reflected in regular inter-governmental meetings and the ever stronger relations in trade, education and culture, Minister of Finance Mihály Varga said in his speech addressed to participants of the 2nd Hungarian-Vietnamese Rectors’ Conference.
At the event organized for tertiary education leaders of the two countries, head of the Vietnamese delegation was Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
Hungary appreciates the economic achievements of Vietnam in recent years, the Minister noted. Vietnam has been a main bridgehead for the Hungarian economy in Southeast Asia. This fact is also demonstrated in the development of our economic and trade relations: the volume of bilateral trade in goods increased by 80 percent, to USD 357 million in 2017, and the strong growth momentum is expected to persist also in 2018, he said.
Speaking of the development of education relations between the two countries, Mihály Varga said Hungary was proud that some 3000 Vietnamese university students had graduated in the country in the past decades, and this showed that Hungary’s tertiary education system was globally competitive and studying in Hungary was a popular choice.
The 2nd Hungarian-Vietnamese Rectors’ Conference aims to continue to bolster relations between the tertiary education institutions of the two countries, he pointed out. The upgraded Stipendium Hungaricum Programme enables a higher number of Vietnamese students in the period 2019-2021 to study within the Hungarian tertiary education system, Mihály Varga said.
