The Ministry for National Economy has informed Hungarian news agency MTI that Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga and Minister of Justice László Trócsányi held talks with Director-General of the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) Giovanni Kessler on his organisation’s findings on the Budapest Metro Line 4 corruption case and related irregularities.
In their press release, the Ministry for National Economy and the Ministry of Justice stated that, following a four-year investigation, some weeks ago OLAF revealed its findings on the massive corruption scandal which took place in Hungary.
According to the ministries, the report on the Metro 4 project – which officially informed the Hungarian authorities of the biggest Hungarian corruption scandal ever – is also proof of the effectiveness of OLAF’s work. They stated that after the Government of Hungary received and studied the report it filed a submission to the prosecution services on 19 January.
During Thursday’s meeting the ministers said that the Government of Hungary considers the work of OLAF to be effective, and they also held talks on further improving cooperation between Hungarian authorities and OLAF.
The Ministers also assured the OLAF Director-General that the Government of Hungary continues to be prepared to support cooperation between the Office and the Hungarian authorities. The ministries’ press release states that those at the meeting agreed that improving the existing measures and work of authorities is indispensable to eliminating crimes against the EU’s financial interests.
In a press statement released to Hungarian news agency MTI, the Office of the Chief Prosecutor stated that Giovanni Kessler also held talks with Chief Prosecutor Péter Polt.
