“It is in the interests of the Hungarian economy for the scientific and research results of universities to be utilized as rapidly as possible, and to reinforce economic development and innovation as a result”, Minister of Finance Mihály Varga declared at the University of Debrecen’s academic year opener.
“In Hungary, there is to all intents and purposes full employment among university graduates, meaning young people with higher education diplomas can expect to find jobs that offer a good professional career and increasingly high salaries”, the Finance Minister emphasised.
“The scientific research taking place within Hungary’s higher education system is among the frontrunners worldwide”, Mr. Varga pointed out, highlighting the fact that Hungary has a great need for creators and intellectual workshops, who and which are capable of binging about something new.
“Good higher education systems and universities that make progress in science and facilitate economic growth as a result develop in rapidly developing countries that keep up with the world”, the Minister said. “This is one of the reasons why it is important for us to maintain growth, in the interests of which, in addition to universities, we must also continue our disciplined fiscal policy, preserve the high rate of investment, and mobilize our remaining workforce reserves”, he explained.
The Minister pointed out that the performance of the Hungarian economy also grew by 5.2% in the second quarter of 2019, while the number of people in employment has exceeded 4 and a half million for over six months, the employment rate has exceeded 70%, and incomes increased by over 10 percent during the first half of this year. “In addition, Hungary’s outstanding rate of economic growth is occurring within a slowing European environment, and the fact that this slowdown is not yet being felt here indicates that Hungary’s vulnerability to external risks has decreased”, he stated.
With relation to the University, Mr. Varga said: “The University of Debrecen is one of the oldest universities in Hungary, and plays an outstanding role in research & development and in training the intelligentsia of tomorrow”. As he explained: “The institution is one of the country’s most important higher education and scientific centres that provides students with a quality of education with which they can stand their ground within scientific life or in their chosen field even amidst today’s rapid changes”.
