The Government is doing everything in its power to ensure that companies and private persons offering personal transport services comply with regulations on taxation and driving safety, Minister of State for Parliamentary and Taxation Affairs András Tállai said. Uber drivers are going to be constantly and strictly controlled by the Hungarian Tax and Customs Administration (NAV), he added.
Nobody can avoid paying taxes, the Minister of State emphasised at a press conference.
The Hungarian tax authority sides with law-abiding taxpayers, he pointed out.
In light of tax controls conducted hitherto, Hungarian Uber drives – although they transport people in an organized and business-like way – do not have tax registration numbers and do not issue invoices, he said, adding that every single Uber driver has failed tax controls. The NAV had informed these drivers that in case they wanted to operate regularly with the aim of material gain they must register at the tax authority, András Tállai said. Following these warnings, some four-fifth of notified drivers applied for a taxation registration number.
Transgressors face a maximum fine of HUF 200 000.
