Hungary’s unemployment rate hit a record low of 4 percent in October 2017

The unemployment rate has hit 4 percent, the lowest figure ever since the regime change in 1989 – according to data published by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) for the period August-October 2017. The number of people in employment has also risen by 84 thousand on the primary labour market, and thus the total number of people with a job in Hungary was 4 million 445 thousand. Government measures have also contributed to steadily improving labour market indicators: since the change of government in 2010 the number of people in employment has increased by 736 thousand, and within that the number of private sector jobs has been up by 560 thousand.

In comparison to the previous estimate of Hungary’s economic growth, analysts in the latest OECD Economic Outlook revised their prognosis upward, from 3.8 percent to 3.9 percent for the year 2017, and from 3.4 percent to 3.6 percent for the year 2018.

Volume of investment hit record high in Hungary

The value of investment in the first three quarters of the year totalled HUF 4 144bn in Hungary, which figure shows an increase of 22.6 percent year-on-year, Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga said, commenting on the latest investment data published by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH).

Retail sales growth trend unbroken for the 51st consecutive month in Hungary

In September 2017, unadjusted data show that the volume of retail sales grew by 5.6 percent year-on-year, while data adjusted for calendar effects indicate growth of 6.2 percent. The sector’s 51-month upward growth trend has been underpinned, among other factors, by VAT reductions, job growth and the marked increase in real wages caused by the Government’s six-year wage deal.

This meeting will make cooperation between the Government and domestic construction enterprises in the handling of the challenges faced by the sector even more efficient, he added.
