“The national identity of the Hungarian peoples was developed during a series of struggles for freedom. Our view of the world is still based on this today: we are free and we want to remain free”, Minister of Agriculture Sándor Fazekas said at an event in Tiszafüred to mark the 61st anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
“The day of remembrance for the revolution and war of independence is an important day on which the Hungarian peoples of the world, wherever they may live, stop for a moment to remember ad celebrate an event that was crucial to the lives of Hungarians and also found its way onto the pages of world history”, the Minister said. “Nations provide examples to each other, and accordingly the Battle of Nándorfehérvár and the revolutions of 1848 and 1956 are an inspiring model for the world that we can still proudly undertake today. 1956 is a shining example of the fact that values never change: we were a people who loved freedom, and we have remained so, and this has not changed in centuries. Perhaps this is why the Hungarian peoples have continued to exist in Earth, because we are a nation that is capable of renewal, and which is capable of struggling to achieve new goals”, he continued.
“These days, protecting nation states is on the agenda, and we hope that, unlike in 1956, this time we will not have to fight this battle alone”, Mr. Fazekas stressed, adding “We must always be successful and protect our values in the given situation”.
Following his speech and the inauguration of the city’s new 1956 memorial, the Minister of Agriculture also took part in commemorative events in nearby Tiszaörs and Tiszaigar.
