Minister of Defence Dr. István Simicskó was part of the Hungarian delegation at the working meeting within the framework of which Prime Minster Viktor Orbán received Chancellor of Austria Christian Kern on Tuesday 26 July in Budapest.

The main topics of the meeting included the migration crisis situation affecting Europe and illegal migration. Mr. Simicskó’s counterpart, Austrian Minister of Defence and Sports Hans Peter Doskozil, was also in Budapest as a member of the Austrian delegation.

The two Ministers last met on 14 July in Röszke to discuss possible solutions to the migration crisis. During that meeting, the Hungarian Minister of Defence said that Europe’s security and European values are important to both Hungary and Austria, that the protection of the European Union’s external Schengen borders are vital to reducing migration, and that cooperation between the countries affected is extremely important in this field.

At the press conference following today’s working meeting, it was announced that Austria will be sending twenty police officers to help protect the Hungarian-Serbian border. Hungary has asked Austria to examine opportunities for further cooperation.
