Hungary continues supporting Macedonia’s Euro-Atlantic integration efforts to join NATO and the European Union, Minister of Defence István Simicskó said at a press briefing held together with Macedonian Minister of Defence Zoran Jolevski.
István Simicskó pointed out that the stability of the Western Balkans is important to Hungarians and also to the whole of Europe.
On Tuesday, 3 May, at a meeting held in the Hungarian Ministry of Defence, the two ministers discussed the ways of strengthening bilateral military cooperation, the migration crisis situation and this year’s NATO Summit in Warsaw.
Speaking at the press briefing, the Hungarian Minister of Defence said that first of all, at the meeting he thanked Macedonia for protecting Europe in the migration crisis situation and for carrying out the related tasks by European norms.
He emphasized that over the last six months, the migration pressure on Europe has been a test of strength for Macedonia and Hungary alike.
He reaffirmed that Hungary continues to provide Macedonia with all the necessary means for handling the migration crisis. Among these, István Simicskó highlighted the exchange of experience and the sharing of information. In answer to a question, he also noted that if the need arises, Hungary is willing to support Macedonia with equipment and personnel as well.
Besides, the two ministers agreed on the need for strengthening defence cooperation between the two countries, among others in the field of education. The minister pointed to the importance of cooperation in organizing language, EOD and logistic training courses. He added that the Macedonian soldiers can also attend training courses in Hungary for NCOs and officers as well as the General Staff course at the National University of Public Service.
István Simicskó told the press that he personally offered the possibility of sharing the lessons learned by the EOD regiment of the Hungarian Defence Forces, and also discussed with his Macedonian counterpart the possible ways of countering terrorism effectively.
The Minister of Defence stated that Hungarian Chief of Defence Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő will travel to Macedonia on Wednesday to talk over the details of bilateral military cooperation.
Zoran Jolevski expressed thanks to Hungary for supporting Macedonia’s Euro-Atlantic integration and its role in handling the migration situation.
The Macedonian Minister of Defence emphasized the importance of a comprehensive European strategy for handling the migration situation. All countries involved must do their share in the implementation of this strategy, including Macedonia, Turkey and Serbia, and they must also pay attention to the direct neighbors of Iraq and Syria too.
