Hungary, as a member of the European Union and NATO, will send ammunition to Iraq to assist that country's armed forces in their fight against terrorism.

Both the EU and NATO sought to support the government of Iraq and leaders of the Kurdish Autonomous Region, as the Islamic State terrorist group was now undermining security in the region, and threatening the existence of Christian communities and other minorities.

The ammunition to be sent to Iraq free of charge, listed in a government decree published in the official Hungarian Gazette on Thursday, will include several million cartridges, and thousands of mines and armor-piercing shell.
The consignment will not compromise Hungary's combat readiness.

The Hungarian Government has earlier condemned violent acts against Christians in northern Iraq and voiced plans to send aid to the country in cooperation with the US.

On Monday, the first contingent of a Hungarian aid package worth 70,000 euros arrived in Iraq's Erbil to support Christian communities and the authorities of Kurdistan.
