On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of ASEAN a flag hoisting ceremony was organized by the Budapest based missions of ASEAN Member States.
On behalf of the Hungarian Government, Deputy State Secretary Szilveszter Bus, the first Hungarian ambassador accredited to the ASEAN, in his remarks commended the outstanding achievements made by the countries of the association in the course of the past 50 years.
He pointed out that the bilateral relations between Hungary and the ASEAN member states have never been so strong as today: high level meetings are regular between our governments, our trade turnover beating records every year exceeded 2,1 billion USD last year. Tourism is rapidly growing in both directions, our cooperation in higher education is widening: Hungary and ASEAN recently concluded a bilateral agreement on cooperation in the field of education and under the Stipendium Hungaricum program of the Hungarian Government 176 students from ASEAN Member States will commence their studies in Hungarian institutions of higher education in September.
Hungary has opened new diplomatic and trade missions in the ASEAN countries and signed numerous bilateral intergovernmental and inter institutional agreements with ASEAN counterparts in the past years in order to facilitate cooperation with Southeast Asia, the region with growth over global average.
