“From 6 o’clock this morning, Hungarian and Serbian citizens who work or cultivate land on the other side of the border will be able to cross the border via the Röszke, Tompa and Hercegszántó border crossing points”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced on his Facebook page on Thursday.

“In view of the coronavirus pandemic, Serbia recently introduced extremely tight restrictions as a result of which personal travel across the country’s borders was totally banned. This naturally also includes the Serbian-Hungarian border”, Mr. Szijjártó said.

“My fellow Members of Parliament Róbert Zsigó and Gábor Bányai contacted me with relation to the fact that the situation is causing major difficulties for Hungarian and Vojvodinan Hungarians living in the vicinity of the border, since people whose workplaces are on the other side of the border have also been unable to cross the border to go to work”, he explained.

“Based on the request from my fellow MPs, I initiated talks with Serbian Minister of Interior Nebojša Stefanović and Minister of European Integration Jadranka Joksimović, during the course of which we successfully came to an agreement with relation to the fact that we will be enabling commuting for Hungarian and Serbian citizens at three border crossing stations”, he added.
