According to Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, the construction of the TurkStream gas pipeline enhances Hungary’s energy security as, upon its completion, it will be possible to purchase gas via a new route, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade informed the Hungarian news agency MTI on Wednesday.

The laying down of the 403-kilometre-long Serbian section of the gas pipeline was announced on Wednesday morning. According to the Ministry’s communication, welcoming the completion of the works, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said Hungary is making progress with the preparatory phase of the project as planned, and now all that is required is that Bulgaria guarantee the quality of the gas to be conveyed. Criticisms coming from the West are completely unfounded as three of the four European countries situated on the new gas conveyance route are members of NATO, he added. It is to be expected, the Minister highlighted, that from 2021 some 9.8 billion cubic metres of gas could reach Hungary via TurkStream, the communication reads.
