The Government is launching a 300 billion forint (EUR 967m) infrastructure development scheme to double the number of Hungary's border crossings by 2020, Parliamentary State Secretary Péter Szijjártó said on Tuesday.
Currently the Hungarian border can be crossed at 93 locations and the plan is to increase this by 100 in the next six and a half years. Political and financing agreements have already been signed for 50 of these facilities, Mr Szijjártó stated at the opening of ELTE's Hungarian summer university for the Carpathian Basin in Budapest. The new border crossings will help advance economic cooperation within the Carpathian Basin, he pointed out.
Central Europe has a key role in strengthening Europe because it has a good chance to become an engine for growth. To achieve this, there is a need for stronger economic cooperation within the Carpathian Basin, he added.
