The new Hungarian Consulate in Nuremberg was officially opened on Friday. The ceremony was also attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó.

In his speech, Mr. Szijjártó emphasised: “Hungarian-Bavarian cooperation plays an important role for Hungary within the fields of the economy, trade, education and culture”.

“Bavaria is Hungary’s number one trade partner, and is the German state that is the source of the second largest number of investors in Hungary”, he highlighted. “In the case of Bavaria and Hungary, relations between people represents the most stable foundation, of which the various education-related partnerships are prime examples” the Minister underlined.

Mr. Szijjártó thanked Bavaria for providing continuous funding to the Andrássy Gyula German Language University of Budapest, and indicated: “In accordance with a new decision, the full spectrum of German education can now be created in Hungary, from kindergarten to university master’s degrees”. The Minister also pointed out that Bavaria and Hungary are connected by 113 twin city links and 58 school partnerships.

“In order to assure the effectiveness of our existing close cooperation, Hungary has decided that Bavaria will be the first German state is which it will be opening its second diplomatic representation”, the Minister pointed out. “We expect the operations of the new Consulate to reinforce economic, cultural and human relations between Hungary and Bavaria, and Nuremberg and its environs”, he added.

Mayor of Nuremberg Marcus König said there are around 100 thousand Hungarians living in Bavaria, and some 12 thousand in Nuremberg and its vicinity. In future, they will not only receive all necessary assistance towards the administering of their affairs at the Chief Consulate in Munich, but also in Nuremberg, he explained.
