Barcelona van attack – Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Hungarian national among those injured in attack
There is a Hungarian national among those injured in the Barcelona attack: a Hungarian woman is lightly injured, but she has already been released from hospital, Levente Magyar, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said at his press conference held on Friday.
He said: luckily, there is no Hungarian among the victims.
The injured woman sustained a broken arm, and the staff members of the Barcelona Consulate General contacted her in person, but she requested no assistance, he told the press.
The State Secretary highlighted: the Consulate General provides a round-the-clock duty service, the foreign representation can be reached at the telephone number +34 629745593.
He remarked: at present, there are some three thousand Hungarians in Catalonia.
Mr Magyar reiterated: Hungary condemns the attack in the strongest possible terms which is now the umpteenth incident of this nature in the past year and a half in Europe. This time, a country was attacked which had recently lived in relative peace and calm, and this means that terrorism can strike anywhere and at any time, he pointed out. He added: we have, however, succeeded in protecting Hungary „from this crazy nightmare” that is afflicting Western-Europe, and the Government is determined to ensure that this will remain the case also in the future.
Mr Magyar stressed: there is ongoing intensive work for the preservation of safety and security. There is a clear correlation between illegal migration and the European threat of terrorism, between the attacks and the fact that people with unknown backgrounds have been allowed to flow into Europe uncontrolled, he explained.
He took the view that only few governments responded to this by taking action, but the Hungarian Government was one of these. "We would like to see action", and Hungary is ready to continue its policy which may be a kind of guarantee for avoiding incidents of a similar nature, he stated.
The State Secretary said: we want to take action in order to ensure that nothing like this can happen again in Europe, and that Hungary should never be exposed to similar events. Hungary is therefore ready to mobilise further resources with a view to preventing such incidents because they do not necessarily have to happen, the threat of terrorism can be banished from Europe.
Mr Magyar remarked: during the course of the night, there was another terrorist attack in Cambrils in which seven were injured. There has been no official notification of Hungarian nationals having been injured, and as no one enquired at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in connection with the incident, there is a strong hope that no Hungarian has been injured.
In answer to a question, the State Secretary also spoke about the Hungarian woman who drowned in the sea in Bulgaria. As he said, they received official notification that a Hungarian woman had drowned in the sea in Bulgaria during night bathing on Thursday. The diplomats concerned have taken the necessary measures.
