According to a communication sent by Mr Péter Szijjártó to the Hungarian News Agency, “Hungarian police officers were brutally attacked at the Röszke border crossing. The attack came from the territory of Serbia”, the Hungarian foreign minister reacted to a statement made by the German Minister for Defence and Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic.

Mr Szijjártó Peter stated: “As a result of aggressive attacks carried out by a group of immigrants, 14 Hungarian police officers were injured. It is natural that the Hungarian police defended themselves and defended the territory of Hungary”, he added.

“If the Serbian police had prevented the attack against the Hungarian police, there would have been no violent incidents”, he said. In an interview given to the International channel of the CNN news television on Wednesday, the German Minister for Defence Ursula von der Leyen called the actions of the Hungarian authorities taken against migrants and refugees at the Hungarian–Serbian border unacceptable.

Serbian Prime Minister, Aleksandar Vucic, accused Hungary of its “brutal” and “non-European” way of treating migrants at the border of the two countries, and urged for an intervention by the European Union. The Serbian Prime Minister called on Hungary not to deploy more tear gas onto the territory of the Serbian state and said that he is planning to put this issue on the agenda of a meeting with American Foreign Minister John Kerry on Wednesday.
