“The Hungarian military contingent serving in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq is also to become involved in the training of the Kurdish defence force, the Peshmerga”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó told Hungarian news agency MTI in New York on Tuesday.
Mr. Szijjártó was speaking with relation to a Tuesday meeting of the coalition against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organisation held on Tuesday within the framework the UN General Assembly Summit.
The Hungarian delegation was led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. "Unfortunately, the Islamic State is conquering more and more territory and more and more people are being forced to leave their homes because of the atrocities carried out by the Islamic State. Accordingly, if we truly wish to reduce migration pressure on Europe, we must significantly intensify our efforts against the Islamic State", Foreign Minister Szijjártó said.
"Hungary is prepared to do so, and accordingly our contingent of 110 soldiers, who are already in Kurdistan, will not only perform guard and security duties in future, but will also participate in the training of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces", he added.
