“From Friday morning, Hungarian and Slovakian citizens are now able to cross the bridge connecting the two Komároms within the framework of local border traffic”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a statement to Hungarian news agency MTI on Friday.
“During the current epidemic, is it particularly important to protect the Hungarian people and their health, but assuring people’s supply and the functioning of the economy is naturally also an important task”, the Minister explained.
“Major factories and industrial capacities have been established on both sides of the Hungarian-Slovakian border, people from both sides of the border are continuously crossing the border into each other’s countries to work, very many Hungarians from Upper Hungary travel daily to the southern side of the border to work, and lots of Hungarians who live here work on the northern side of the border”, he stated. “This is why it was important to create an opportunity for Hungarian and Slovakians to be able to cross the border”, he pointed out.
“Two border crossing points have been designated for Hungarian and Slovakian citizens, who can travel within a 30-kilometre zone adjacent to the border”, Mr. Szijjártó highlighted. “However, in addition to these two border crossing points, the people of Komárom also indicated that they would like their border crossing point to be reopened, which we have now made possible thanks to cooperation with the Slovakian authorities”, he said.
