“Two charter flights will be taking off next week to pick up Hungarians who have become stranded in North America”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced on his Facebook page on Friday. The Minister asked everyone who would like to return home to Hungary on one of these flights to register at the closest foreign representation.

“There are still hundreds of Hungarians in North America, despite the fact that 667 have been successfully brought home with the help of Hungary’s foreign representations during the past five days”, the Minister pointed out.

“In view of the large number of Hungarians who have become stranded in the United States and Canada, and the fact that it has become essentially impossible to return to Hungary using scheduled air passenger services, we have decided to send two separate rescue planes to North America next week”, the Minister announced. “The two planes operated by Wizzair will be picking up and bringing home stranded Hungarians from Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Miami”, he added. The Minister indicated that the planes will also be landing in a Canadian city, adding that there are a total of 460 places on the two planes, which are exclusively reserved for Hungarian citizens. Mr. Szijjártó asked that anyone who would like to return home register at one of Hungary’s foreign representations.

“The aim is not to bring home Hungarians who are living in the United States and Canada, but citizens who live in Hungary and were visiting North America when the travel restrictions were introduced”, Mr. Szijjártó emphasised.
