“Hungarians who arrived in Great Britain prior to January 2020 will retain their rights”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said at Friday’s session of Parliament.
Foreigners who arrived in Great Britain under EU law, thus also including Hungarian citizens, can register until 31 December 2020 if no Brexit agreement is reached, thereby certifying that they already lived there prior to Britain’s exit.
“There is still no guarantee that Great Britain’s exit negotiations from the EU will come to a close in an orderly fashion with an agreement, and accordingly Hungary has begun preparations for a no-deal Brexit”, the Minister highlighted. “During the course of this, we are placing particular emphasis on the fact that the rights of Hungarians living in Great Britain cannot be affected, just as it is also important for the rights of British citizens living in Hungary to also be protected”, he said. “British citizens living in Hungary are eligible to receive preferential residence status, for which they need to register with the Hungarian authorities by 31 December 2020”, he stated.
