“Hungary and Brazil are working in close cooperation in the United Nations in the interests of assuring that the global organisation cannot use the Global Compact for Migration, which the Hungarian government previously rejected, as a basis of reference for international law”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a statement to Hungarian news agency MTI from Washington on Thursday following talks with Brazilian Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo.

“UN organisations have been ‘found out’ on several occasions recently while trying to have parts of the Global compact for migration adopted in various directives”, the Minister highlighted. “In the interests of protecting against this, we have established a joint prevention mechanism with the Brazilians”, he stated.

Péter Szijjártó and Ernesto Araújo agreed that the two countries will be coordinating their activities in support of Middle Eastern Christians. The Minister added that the first joint Middle Eastern project between the two countries is close to finalisation. Mr. Szijjártó also told the press that in the interests of education cooperation Hungary is affording 250 scholarship places to Brazilian students to attend Hungarian universities, in addition to which it will be sending a Hungarian lecturer to the University of São Paulo.
