“Hungary has protected and will continue to protect its borders”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó declared in a post published on Facebook on Sunday evening following talks with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias.

The Minister explained that his Greek counterpart had briefed him on the situation that has developed along the Turkish-Greek border, the accumulation of thousands of migrants, and the violent action against Greek border guards.

Mr. Szijjártó made it clear that he supports the extraordinary convening of EU foreign ministers to discuss the situation that has developed at an official council meeting. On Sunday, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell proposed the convening of an extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers on the initiative of Greece, and the council meeting will be held next week.

“If anybody, the Hungarians are fully aware of what it is like when the national border is attacked in an organised manner, when police are bombarded with projectiles, and when parallel to all this the international liberal media is spreading pieces of fake news”, Mr. Szijjártó underlined. “We have protected and will continue to protect our borders, and will not allow entry to a single migrant. This is also what I encouraged my Greek colleague to do”, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade added.

According to the UN, over 10 thousand migrants have accumulated at the Turkish-Greek border on Sunday following a statement by Turkey earlier in the week according to which it can no longer afford to hold back the asylum seekers currently on its territory. According to the Greek government, the Turkish authorities are actively helping the migrants to reach the border.
