“Never before has Hungary’s gas supply been on such a secure footing; Hungary’s gas storage facilities are full for the first time in history”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said following a meeting with CEO of Gazprom Alexei Miller.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Mr. Szijjártó had highlighted: “There are currently 6.4 billion cubic metres of natural gas in storage, which means that this winter has not yet begun, but we can already begin negotiations on supplies for next winter’s heating season”. “This is providing long-term calculability and security with relation to Hungary’s natural gas supply”, he stated.

“Today, an agreement has also been reached with relation to the fact that shipments of natural gas will recommence in April of next year, and we will be purchasing 2 billion cubic metres of gas from Gazprom via Austria, just as we did this year. In addition, negotiations have also begun with relation to the purchasing of a further 3 billion cubic metres of gas next year. Furthermore, the tender for the pre-ordering of capacities relating to the Serbian-Hungarian interconnector moved forward into its second phase today, thanks to which 10 billion cubic metres of natural gas will be arriving in Hungary from the south through the Turkish Stream gas pipeline via Bulgaria and Serbia each year”, the statement said, quoting the Minister.
