On Thursday in Vienna Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó told the Hungarian news agency MTI that by virtue of having spent EUR 800 million on the protection of its borders, Hungary has elevated itself to the status of European country sharing the most solidarity with Germany.

The Minister arriving at the meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE) responded to a statement made by Martin Schulz in which the head of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Germany said: Hungary is moving further and further away from the EU.

Mr Szijjártó stated: "Hungary shared the highest degree of solidarity with Germany” as if Hungary had not invested EUR 800 million in the protection of its borders, instead of one and a half million far more illegal immigrants would have arrived in Europe, and the vast majority of these immigrants would no doubt have gone to Germany.

He took the view that by virtue of Hungary having invested EUR 800 million in the protection of the borders instead of developing the Hungarian economy, it has elevated itself to the status of European country sharing the most solidarity with Germany, and “we have spared them having to bear further burdens”.
