“Hungary supports the reinforcement of European security and is calling for the continent to do more in the interests of its own security”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó declared on Wednesday in Budapest at a press conference on another topic, in reply to a question from the press.

Common European action with relation to foreign and security policy, as well as the establishment of a joint European military force, were proposed by the German Chancellor at Tuesday’s plenary session of the European Parliament.

Referring to the statement by Angela Merkel, Mr. Szijjártó noted that Hungary had also made a similar proposal earlier, but as a member of NATO it regards it as important to avoid parallels between the European defence system and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, because those could lead to operational difficulties and conflicts, he added.

The Minister said he believes that joint defence is justified in view of the external dangers threatening the continent, stressing that the illegal immigration aimed at Europe must also be included among these dangers.
