On Friday, following Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó’s negotiations with his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Poposki, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade informed National News Agency MTI that Hungary will help Macedonia curb the migrant wave and maintain safety of the country.

At the meeting the two ministers agreed that the uncontrolled and unlimited influx of illegal migrants poses great security and economic risks to all of Europe, the Ministry’s statement reads.

Europe is currently defenceless, since terror organisations can easily use the migrant crisis to “deliver their fighters” to Europe, they explained.

They emphasised that Hungary continues to support the European and Euro Atlantic integration of Macedonia, which is essential for the stability of the region.

“The Government of Hungary believes that it is nonsense that Macedonia has been an official EU candidate for almost 11 years, and yet accession talks haven’t even started yet; we therefore call for starting them this year”, Mr. Szijjártó said.

The two Ministers also talked about involving Hungarian companies in investments related to the development of Macedonia’s energy system, the statement reads.

On Friday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán held talks with Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski. The Hungarian Prime Minister also called for the Euro Atlantic integration of the Western-Balkan country. Hungary has a strategic interest in seeing every country in the Balkans between itself and Greece becoming members of the EU and NATO, the Prime Minister stated. He said that today there is a “gaping hole” between Hungary and Greece.
