“Hungary welcome’s the new Brazilian administration’s decision, according to which it is changing its decision and is not supporting the UN Global Compact for Migration”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in a statement to Hungarian news agency MTI on Wednesday.

“More and more countries around the world are recognising the inherent dangers of the Compact, because with it the UN is making the same mistake as Brussels did with the mandatory resettlement quotas”, the Minister highlighted in the statement.

“The Compact concentrates exclusively on the interests of migrants, and its adoption will lead to new waves of migration”, he emphasised.

“With Brazil’s decision, the number of countries who have not voted in favour of the migration compact has increased to 41, and this clearly indicates that the efforts aimed at making the migration compact a basis of reference in future are not credible and are unacceptable”, Mr. Szijjártó pointed out.

On Tuesday, Brazilian daily O Estado de Sao Paolo reported on the fact that Brazil has officially exited the UN Global Compact for Migration. According to the paper, the UN received the country’s decision with concern.

The paper’s sources highlighted the rapidity with which the Brazilian Government informed the United Nations of its exit, just eight days after its formation.
