On Thursday Sudanese authorities let Mariam Yehya Ibrahim, who was earlier persecuted for her Christian faith, and her children leave the country, arriving safely in Italy. After their arrival they were received in the Vatican by Pope Francis I.

The decision recognised the supremacy of freedom of faith and of human dignity. Hungary, along with a number of other members of the international community has called for the earliest and appropriate settlement of the case of the Sudanese woman and her family. No person should be persecuted in one’s homeland for one’s faith, even if belonging to a minority. Hungary welcomes Sudan’s decision to ultimately handle the case of Mariam Yehya Ibrahim and her family in this spirit.
