“Hungary will be supporting the election of the United Arab Emirates to the UN Security Council, and also to the Human Rights Council”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó declared on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

In the Facebook post, Mr. Szijjártó reported on the fact that he had spoken by telephone with the Middle Eastern country’s Foreign Minister, Sheik Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with whom, as he explained, “we have established a truly friendly relationship in recent years”.

According to Mr. Szijjártó. the parties discussed the agreement on the normalisation of relations that has been concluded between the Emirates and Israel, which the Hungarian Foreign Minister evaluated as being extremely important and historically significant. Mr. Szijjártó congratulated his UAE counterpart on the agreement, also emphasising Mr. Al Nahyan’s personal role in the successful brokering of the agreement. “This agreement could instil hope in everybody that a time of peace could eventually truly come about in the Middle East”, he stated. “Hungary regards both Israel and the United Arab Emirates as friends and good partners, and regularly supports the efforts of these countries on international forums”, Mr. Szijjártó also pointed out.

Hungary’s chief diplomat also informed Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan that Hungary will be supporting the election of the United Arab Emirates to the UN Security Council, and also to the Human Rights Council. Mr. Szijjártó also announced that the two countries have finalised their negotiations concerning an agreement on the mutual protection of investments, which “mirrors the interests of Hungarian enterprises that are investing in the region, and which represents a major step forward in our economic cooperation”.
