“Hungary will not tolerate double standards”, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó told Hungarian news agency MTI on Wednesday.

In his statement, the Hungarian Foreign Minister reacted to the fact that in a speech before the European Parliament, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker called the Turkish comments aimed at Holland shocking, and stressed that the European Union will never accept a comparison between Nazism and the current government.

Mr. Juncker was referring to the fact that a heated dispute erupted between Holland and Turkey on Sunday after The Hague did not allow two Turkish ministers to attend a campaign event in Rotterdam relating to the referendum on the amendment of the Turkish constitution, after which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the Dutch government “a Nazi residue” and accused them of conducting “state terrorism”.

Mr. Szijjártó wrote: “We were also waiting for Jean-Claude Juncker to be outraged when ‘the darkest period in Europe’s history’ was mentioned with relation to Hungary simply because the country is adhering to international law and protecting the Hungarian border, and within it Europe, from illegal immigration”.

“The Brussels leader failed to express his outrage then”, he added.

“I would like to take the opportunity on our national holiday to make it clear that we will not tolerate double standards. Only the people of Hungary can decide Hungary’s future”, the Minister emphasised.
